Abstract
Vertebral artery injury may be easily overlooked because of its rarity and relative lack of early symptoms. However, its mortality and morbidity are high when early recognition and management are failed to carry out. We have met five cases of vertebral artery injuries during the period of 1974 to 1985 with one postoperative death. Three cases were due to glass injury and two were by stabs. All injuries were involved in left side of vertebral artery and violence was the cause of injury except one (case II). One mortality was occured after reconstruction of common carotid artery transection and ligation of vertebral artery rupture due to irreversible shock and brain damage. One case was recovered without any complication after ligation. Three other cases were also treated injuries with proximal ligation and ligation or Gelfoam packing for distal control but complicated with ipsilateral loss of vision, deviation of tongue and vocal cord paralysis respectively. Brief review of this particular vascular injury was made.
